Sanitize Sensibly

Take a look at the desk you're sitting at. Maybe there's a coffee stain here or there, but other than that, it looks clean enough to eat off, right? Not hardly.

According to a recent study by microbiologists at the University of Arizona, every square inch of office desks is crawling with about 21,000 germs that can cause strep throat or pneumonia, and viruses that can cause colds or flu. (Office toilet seats had 49 germs per square inch.) And that’s not the worst part of it. Office phones have more than 25,000 germs per square inch.

A follow-up study performed last year found that the dirtiest workplace surfaces (from most germy to least germy) are the phone, computer mouse and desktop.

The next time you stock up on soap and hand sanitizers, don’t forget to pick up some antibacterial wipes to clean keep your desk, keyboard, mouse and phone, too.
